Is diabetes a growing concern?
Reflection...
Are you or do you know someone who has been diagnosed as a diabetic? Why is diabetes reaching epidemic levels in Canada? Why would changes to your diet be useful when managing diabetes? |
Is there more than one type of diabetes? Who is diagnosed with diabetes? There are 3 different types of diabetes that are diagnosed in different groups of people.
Type 1: most commonly diagnosed in children or adolescents and happens when the pancreas cannot produce insulin. Accounts for 10% of all people with diabetes. Type 2: accounts for 90% of cases. Occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body is unable to effectively use the insulin produced. Usually develops in adulthood but some at risk-populations of children are now being diagnosed with this type of diabetes. Gestational: occurs temporarily during pregnancy. Occurs in 2-4% of all pregnancies and leads to increased risk of developing diabetes in both the mother and child later on. |
